SHARPS is an organization that has long raised concerns about the health and human rights of workers behind semiconductor production.

We have worked on workers’ health and safety issues for a long time.

And this year, on September 19, we are joining the Climate Justice March.

Here, I would like to show you a poster for the Climate Justice March, which expresses our concerns.

It says:

“Stop the reckless expansion that is burning the planet!”

And it calls for stopping the three mega-clusters.

One of the major issues in Korea today is the Mega Cluster.

It is a plan to massively expand AI semiconductor factories.

We are raising our voices together about the environmental problems caused by the expansion of the semiconductor industry,

and about the destruction of local residents’ lives.

With this concern, we are also participating in this event today.

In Korea, more than 80 organizations have come together to form a joint action for a just transition in the semiconductor industry.

There can be different views on the expansion of the semiconductor industry.

Different regions, different organizations, and different parts of the labor movement may have different concerns and priorities.

But we have something in common.

We oppose the reckless expansion of the semiconductor industry

when it does not seriously consider the risks of the industry itself,

the safety of workers, the lives of local residents, and the environment.

There is also growing concern about the race to expand the semiconductor industry as quickly as possible, and about the long working hours imposed on semiconductor workers in this process.

Semiconductor-specialized high schools are also being established across the country.

But there is still no clear policy for education on workers’ health and safety.

SHARPS continues to receive reports from people affected by occupational diseases.

In the past, many of the reports were about regular workers at Samsung semiconductor plants.

Now, we are receiving more reports involving subcontracted workers, temporary workers, women workers, and even children affected by occupational diseases.

The risks are moving downward,

to more vulnerable workers,

and to places where there is less regulation.

The expansion of the semiconductor industry must not come at the cost of workers’ health, local communities, or the environment.

Speed cannot be more important than life.

We want to raise our voices together against all forms of climate injustice and inequality, including mega-projects.

We want to protect our climate and our ecosystems.

We want to protect our rights to our lives, our work, and our communities.

And we want to move toward equality, dignity, and democracy for everyone.

So, let us raise our voices together!

And we have also prepared leaflets introducing SHARPS, as well as stickers.

They are at the back of the event area.

Please take a look,

and please take one with you.

Thank you..
