SHARPS (Supporters for the Health And Rights of People in the Semiconductor Industry)

Mission Statement

- On November 20, 2007, 19 civil society organizations formed a joint committee

SHARPS is a non-governmental organization dedicated to protecting the health and human rights of workers in the semiconductor and electronics industries.

We work to achieve recognition of occupational diseases affecting semiconductor workers and support workers so they can work in safe and healthy conditions. Our activities include counseling and assistance for victims of occupational illnesses, support for workers’ compensation claims, research on workplace hazards, advocacy for policy and institutional reform, and solidarity with domestic and international labor and human rights organizations.

Through these efforts, SHARPS seeks to prevent industrial diseases, ensure corporate accountability, and promote dignity, safety, and justice for all workers in the semiconductor and electronics industries.

1. ย  Set greenhouse gas reduction targets and transition plans based on climate justice

2. ย  Phase out nuclear and fossil fuels, and expand public renewable energy

3. ย  Reconsider semiconductor and AI industry growth policies for corporations and halt ecologically destructive projects

5. ย  Ensure the sustainability of farming and farmers, and establish the right to food

6. ย  End wars and massacres, and stop arms industry expansion and weapons exports

In preparation for the march, comrades who had met SHARPS at the Yoon Suk-yeol Resignation rallies gathered at our office three weeks earlier. Together, they created large chrysanthemum flowers, made memorial displays with photos of deceased workers attached to recycled CDs, prepared quizzes on semiconductor workersโ€™ health rights and the environment, and designed banners. On the day of the march, forty people joined SHARPS in the streets, carrying our flag, the giant chrysanthemums, banners, and portraits of the deceased. We chanted, โ€œWe want a Just Semiconductor Industry! Guarantee Labor Rights and Climate Justice!โ€ as we marched through the center of Seoul.

Alsoย presentย thatย dayย wereย activistsย fromย AMRC,ย survivorsย andย bereavedย familiesย ofย LGย Styreneย victimsย fromย India,ย whoย joinedย inย solidarity.

During the main rally, SHARPS full-time activist Kwon Young-eun spoke on stage:

โ€œSamsungย usesย overย 500,000ย tonsย ofย hazardousย chemicalsย everyย yearย forย semiconductorย production,ย releasingย thousandsย ofย tonsย ofย pollutants.ย Oneย millionย tonsย ofย wasteย annuallyย isย offloadedย ontoย subcontractedย workers.ย Theย industryย consumesย massiveย amountsย ofย electricityย andย hundredsย ofย thousandsย ofย tonsย ofย waterย daily,ย destroyingย ecosystemsย andย communities.

Yetย theย Koreanย governmentย isย pushingย aheadย withย theย Semiconductorย Specialย Actโ€”pouringย massiveย stateย financesย andย taxย breaksย intoย chaebolย companiesย withoutย anyย safetyย orย healthย measures,ย betrayingย bothย workersย andย climateย justice.โ€

Theย 2025ย Climateย Justiceย Marchย wasย moreย thanย justย anย environmentalย rallyโ€”itย wasย aย grandย arenaย ofย peopleโ€™sย politicsย thatย cutย acrossย democracy,ย labor,ย equality,ย andย peace.ย Theย collectiveย cryย ofย โ€œIfย notย now,ย itย willย beย tooย lateโ€ย remainsย asย ourย sharedย promiseย toย goย beyondย theย climateย crisisย towardย survivalย andย aย better,ย newย society.

Full Speech by SHARPS activist Kwon Young-eun (Main Stage):

โ€œIย amย Kwonย Young-eun,ย anย activistย withย SHARPS,ย Supportersย forย theย Healthย andย Rightsย ofย Peopleย inย theย Semiconductorย industry.

Ms.ย Jungย Hyang-sook,ย whoย workedย atย Samsungย Semiconductorย forย 21ย yearsย beforeย developingย aย rareย disease,ย onceย said:โ€˜Iย likedย workingย inย semiconductors.ย Iย wasย proudย ofย it,ย andย Iย couldย buyย clothesย forย myย childrenย withoutย hesitation.ย Butย afterย gettingย sick,ย myย feelingsย becameย complicated.โ€™

Hundredsย ofย semiconductorย workersย whoย becameย illย haveย comeย toย SHARPS.ย Behindย semiconductorsย lieย workersโ€™ย illnessesย andย deaths.

Samsungย usesย overย 500,000ย tonsย ofย toxicย chemicalsย everyย year,ย dischargesย thousandsย ofย tonsย ofย pollutants,ย andย generatesย oneย millionย tonsย ofย wasteย annuallyโ€”burdeningย subcontractedย workers.ย Itย consumesย enormousย amountsย ofย electricityย andย hundredsย ofย thousandsย ofย tonsย ofย waterย daily,ย destroyingย localย ecosystemsย andย communities.

Andย yet,ย theย governmentย pushesย aheadย withย theย Semiconductorย Specialย Act.ย Itย poursย nationalย financesย intoย corporateย profits,ย grantingย taxย breaksย andย privilegesย toย chaebols.ย Evenย asย theย environmentย isย destroyedย andย theย livesย ofย residentsย andย workersย collapse,ย theyย turnย away.ย Economistsย pointย outย thatย theseย chaebolย subsidiesย cannotย evenย guaranteeย theย so-calledย โ€˜economicย benefitsโ€™ย toutedย byย theย governmentย andย corporations.

Thisย isย notย limitedย toย semiconductors.ย AIย industryย promotion,ย newย airports,ย cableย carsย inย nationalย parks,ย dams,ย theย Fourย Majorย Riversย Projectโ€”allย areย examplesย ofย unequal,ย growth-centeredย developmentย beingย pushedย through.

Letย usย resistย together.ย Letย usย cryย outย together:Notย theย profitsย ofย chaebolย corporations,ย butย aย worldย whereย lifeย andย dignityย comeย first!ย Letย usย buildย itย together!โ€
